The Colts have added some much needed reinforcements to their banged up cornerback room at training camp.
With a depleted cornerback room, the Indianapolis Colts announced a number of roster moves on Thursday, signing cornerbacks Tre Herndon and Duke Shelley, while placing injured cornerback David Long on injured reserve.
The team also released tight end TE Albert Okwuegbunam Jr.

With both of their outside starting CB2 competitors currently battling hamstring injuries, Jaylon Jones and JuJu Brents, the Colts have seen their training camp cornerback depth recently dwindle—especially with backup and special teamer Long also banged up.
Regarding Herndon, the 5’11,” 185 pound cornerback was originally signed by the Jacksonville Jaguars (2018-23) as an undrafted free agent, but has also spent time with the New York Giants (2024) and New Orleans Saints (2024) practice squads.
During his 7-year pro career, he has 243 tackles (186 solo), 9 tackles for loss, 3 interceptions, 32 passes defensed, 2 forced fumbles, and a fumble recovery in 84 career games (34 starts).
Meanwhile, Shelley is a former 2019 6th round pick of the Chicago Bears (2019-21), but later had pro stops with the Minnesota Vikings, Las Vegas Raiders, Los Angeles Rams, Minnesota Vikings, and New York Giants—as he’s been well-traveled during his 6-year NFL career.
In 53 career games (11 starts), the 5’9,” 176 pound cornerback has 93 career tackles (70 solo), an interception, 14 passes defensed, and a fumble recovery.
Both players now have the opportunity to compete for a Colts’ final 53-man roster spot in training camp—or perhaps a practice squad opportunity.
