This offseason, the Indianapolis Colts signed Coleman Owen as an undrafted free agent. Will the wide receiver make the 53-man roster? Sure, he wasn’t drafted, but he has a lot of talent.
Owen was impressive in the Colts’ preseason loss to the Green Bay Packers. Paul Bretl of Colts Wire wrote about his performance:
“In a game where the Colts’ four quarterbacks finished just a bit shy of 300 passing yards, it was Owen who led the team in receiving. Owen proved to be a reliable target in this game, catching four of the five passes that came his way. He totaled 46 yards with a long of 21 and another that went 14 yards. Not to be overlooked is when those completions took place, with Owen coming away with three of them on the Colts’ final drive as they nearly pulled off the last-second win. Owen also had three kick return attempts, averaging 28.7 yards per return.”
It’s difficult for an UDFA (Undrafted Free Agent) to make a roster. But it’s not impossible.

His Career Thus Far
Coleman Owen attended Higley High School in Gilbert, Arizona. He then began his collegiate career at Northern Arizona. Owen played three games as a freshman, compiling two receptions for 19 yards. He started all five games the following year, tallying 16 receptions for 202 yards and two touchdowns.
In 2021, Owen played 11 games, starting nine. He caught 43 passes for 712 yards and six touchdowns. He also received Honorable Mention All-Big Sky accolades.
Owen started all nine of the contests he appeared in during the 2022 campaign. He registered 62 receptions for 690 yards and four touchdowns. Owen was also named a Second Team All-Big Sky selection. In 2023, he earned Second Team All-Big Sky honors after recording 54 catches for 649 yards and five touchdowns.
Owen transferred to Ohio for the 2024 season. During his first year with the Bobcats, he caught 78 passes for 1,245 yards and eight touchdowns. He became only the third player in school history to log over 1,000 receiving yards in a season. Owen also returned 17 punts for 132 yards and a touchdown.
In a win over Buffalo, Owen earned MAC Offensive Player of the Week after catching six passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns and rushing for a 22-yard touchdown. He was later named to the All-MAC First Team.

Crowded WR Room in Indy
The Colts have a quality wide receiver room. The group is led by Michael Pittman Jr., Josh Downs, and Alec Pierce. Each of those three had over 800 receiving yards last season. Plus, Pierce led the NFL in yards per reception with 22.3
And don’t forget about Adonai Mitchell, who was drafted in the second round in 2024. While he struggled as a rookie last year, it’s way too early to give up on him.
Pittman, Downs, Pierce, and Mitchell are locks to make the Colts’ roster. Ashton Dulin and Anthony Gould should make it as well.
It’s highly unlikely that the Colts will go with seven wide receivers. With that said, don’t look for Owen to make the roster. He could make the practice squad, though.
