This Could Be the Most Anticipated Matchup on the Colts Schedule

May 19, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

colts schedule

There are several exciting matchups on the Indianapolis Colts’ schedule this year. The Week 12 road game against the Kansas City Chiefs might be the most anticipated.

When you think of the Chiefs, Taylor Swift probably comes to mind first. However, the Chiefs are not just known for being associated with a famous pop singer. Over the last six years, the team has made five Super Bowl appearances, winning three.

With that said, the Chiefs are one of, if not the best, team in the NFL. They’re led by the legendary trio of head coach Andy Reid, quarterback Patrick Mahomes, and tight end Travis Kelce. It’s always challenging to face Kansas City, whether it’s at home or on the road. We’ll see if the Colts can get a win over Mahomes and Co. in 2025.

Remembering the 2022 Colts vs. Chiefs Contest

If you’re a Colts fan, you probably want to forget the 2022 season even existed. That year, the team finished with a lousy 4-12-1 record. Yeah, that’s pretty lousy. Perhaps the lone highlight of the season was the Week 3 upset home win over the Chiefs.

Indianapolis won the contest 20-17. Colts 37-year-old quarterback Matt Ryan capped an impressive final drive by finding Jelani Woods on a 12-yard touchdown pass with 24 seconds left. Ryan completed 27 of his 37 passes for 222 yards and two touchdowns despite getting sacked five times and losing two fumbles. Meanwhile, Woods, who was a promising rookie at the time, had two touchdown catches.

That was the last time the two teams faced each other. Maybe the Colts can beat Kansas City again, this time on the road.

Improved Colts Defense vs. Patrick Mahomes

Most fans and pundits consider Tom Brady the greatest quarterback in NFL history. Yet, Mahomes could eventually become the G.O.A.T. He has had an sensational career thus far,  winning three Super Bowls, three Super Bowl MVPs and two regular season MVPs.

Mahomes has beaten every NFL team in the regular season, except for one: the Colts. If the Colts’ defense can step up big time, they can stay undefeated against Mahomes.

Indianapolis improved its defense a great deal this offseason. In free agency, they signed players like Charvarius Ward, Camryn Bynum, and Joe Bachie. Then, via the 2025 NFL Draft, they selected defenders like edge-rusher J.T. Tuimoloau, cornerback Justin Walley, defensive tackle Tim Smith, and linebacker Hunter Wohler. The new additions will team up with holdovers like DeForest Buckner, Kenny Moore II, and Laiatu Latu to give the Colts an upgraded defensive unit. Indy’s defense could wind up stopping Mahomes and Kansas City’s high-powered offense.

New Colts defensive coordinator Lou Anarumo has had success in the past against Mahomes. When he was the coordinator of the Cincinnati Bengals, his defense gave the Chiefs fits in the 2022 AFC Championship Game, sacking Mahomes four times. Cincinnati won the game 27-24 and advanced to Super Bowl LVI. Let’s see if Anarumo’s Indy defense can get the job done once again in 2025.
