The Athletic predicts Colts sign Corey Davis, Alejandro Villanueva

March 11, 2021 by Colts Wire Leave a Comment

The Indianapolis Colts have plenty of money to spend in free agency but that doesn’t necessarily mean they will go wild. That said, there are still plenty of options for them to consider on the open market.

The Athletic made predictions for their top-50 free agents, and it had the Colts signing two players from the outside. First up was wide receiver Corey Davis.

Their first big move was trading for Wentz. Now the Colts have to make sure they put the pieces in place to help him succeed. Davis had 65 catches for 984 yards and five touchdowns in 14 games with the Titans in 2020. He averaged 2.73 yards per route run in the regular season, which ranked eighth among 276 qualifying players. Davis offers the floor of a No. 2 wide receiver with the upside of a No. 1 and is only 26 years old.

Adding Davis would be a solid move for the Colts. We profiled him as a free-agency target for Indy as a move that could pay off with some upside if he continues his development.

The next move the Colts made in The Athletic’s predictions was to sign veteran left tackle Alejandro Villanueva.

Attempting to resurrect Wentz’s career with a glaring hole at left tackle is probably not the best idea. At the same time, the Colts’ options are limited. Trent Williams would be great, but the rest of the options are mediocre. Villanueva is 33 and showed signs of decline last year, but because of those things, he shouldn’t break the bank. And he’s been reliable, having started every game for the past six seasons. The Colts can sign him to a one- or two-year deal and try to find a longer-term solution in the draft.

Villanueva’s game isn’t what it used to be but the Colts really only need strong run blocking and adqueate pass blocking from their stop-gap left tackle. They’ve shown they can get away with that given the talent across the offensive line and the way the blocking schemes are constructed.

The Athletic also predicted some in-house free agents to sign elsewhere. They have T.Y. Hilton going to the Chiefs, Justin Houston going to the Ravens and Xaiver Rhodes going to the Bills.
