Well, that went well.
Fans of the Indianapolis Colts have an extra pep in their step today. Their favorite team just got better with a player who is being labeled as one of the draft night steals. It was no secret the Colts wanted the tight end out of Penn State. That was never in doubt. Would he be there at fourteen and would the Colts move up to grab him were the prevailing questions. It couldn’t have worked out any better.
Chris Ballard and his team sat back and watched Warren fall to them with minimal effort. How Warren got past thirteen other teams is a question that I hope gets asked for years. He has the potential to be a stud and take this offense to another level. His ability is something Anthony Richardson desperately needed last year. Brock Bowers brought that to the Raiders, and the Colts are hoping Warren can do that and more.
It’s unclear whether Ballard was lucky or smart, but not having to give up draft capital for someone who several analysts had going as high as fifth to Jacksonville is the cherry on top. When the best player available crosses with the biggest need, it is a payday. Giving up nothing extra to do so is a jackpot. Warren should be able to come in immediately and vault this unit forward. That might not be much of a statement considering what we witnessed last year, but you better believe he is going to bring a high level of skill which will benefit everyone around him.
The Colts got their guy, at their spot, on their terms. The first night couldn’t have worked out much better. There are still huge picks and decisions to make. The work isn’t done, but yesterday was a huge first step. I am excited to see what comes next.
