According to NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, the Detroit Lions are hiring Los Angeles Rams director of college scouting Brad Holmes as the team’s new general manager—meaning Indianapolis Colts assistant general manager Ed Dodds is remaining with the Colts, at least for now:

The #Lions have agreed to terms on a 5-year deal with #Rams Director of College Scouting Brad Holmes as their new GM, sources tell me and @TomPelissero. A meteoric rise for Holmes.

Dodds interviewed for the Lions open general manager position earlier this week.

It’s not that Colts fans were rooting against Dodds getting the Lions job necessarily, as he’s earned the right to become a general manager in the NFL some day soon—should he seriously seek out that prestigious opportunity elsewhere.

However, it points to Dodds being with the Colts for the 2021 season, with the remaining few general manager vacancies continuing to fill up throughout the league.

Having Colts general manager Chris Ballard’s ‘extra set of eyes,’ Dodds, for scouting could be critical for the Colts, especially when having to fill long-term needs at quarterback, wide receiver, left tackle, cornerback, and pass rusher sooner rather than later.

Prior to joining the Colts in 2017, Dodds previously served as the Seattle Seahawks senior executive personnel director (2015-2017) and a longtime national scout.

He’s been highly regarded for his scouting expertise and is a tremendous asset in the Colts scouting/football operations departments. Dodds remains one of the top young general manager candidates throughout the entire league.

For now, ahead of a big offseason, the Colts are lucky to still have him.
