The Colts are reportedly kicking the tires on a potential backup quarterback option.

According to the IndyStar’s Joel Erickson, the Indianapolis Colts tried out former Las Vegas Raiders quarterback Desmond Ridder among other players working out at their minicamp on Tuesday:

Originally a 2022 3rd round pick of the Atlanta Falcons, the 6’3,” 207 pound quarterback has also spent time on the Arizona Cardinals practice squad before being signed off of it by the Raiders last season.

The 25-year-old quarterback has completed 374 of 588 pass attempts (63.6%) for 4,002 total passing yards, 16 passing touchdowns, and 14 interceptions during 25 games (18 starts) for both the Falcons (17) and Raiders (1) organizations.

Of course, he is also the former University of Cincinnati teammate and throwing-mate of current Colts starting wide receiver Alec Pierce, who was selected a round and 21 picks earlier than him by Indianapolis back in the 2022 NFL Draft.

That former Bearcats prolific standout quarterback-to-wide receiver pairing helped lead Cincinnati to its first ever College Football Playoff appearance back in the 2021 season.

With starting quarterback Anthony Richardson expected to rest his sore surgically repaired AC throwing joint for the foreseeable future, the Colts could be potentially kicking the tires on another offseason and possible training camp arm in the interim period until his return.

That being said, Ridder hasn’t shown that’s he a competent starting quarterback option at this point, and is presumably much better suited as a backup—although he’s still young.
