With the ever-changing NFL offseason schedule this season, roster cuts have been flipped on its head. A normal offseason roster would be 90 players but that changed to 80 in 2020.
Now without any preseason games, teams will cut from 80 players to 53 on Thursday, September 4 at 4:00 p.m. ET. The clock is ticking on the Colts to get to the 53 players, and they have already made a few moves.
Also, with the new CBA, teams will have an expanded practice squad, expanding from 10 players to 16, with protection on four players. Six players can also have an unlimited number of accrued seasons, a change from recent years.
Here is how I see the 53-man roster breaking down, along with the practice squad:
Quarterbacks (3): Philip Rivers, Jacoby Brissett, Jacob Eason
Running backs (4): Marlon Mack, Jonathon Taylor, Nyheim Hines, Jordan Wilkins
Wide receivers (6): T.Y. Hilton, Michael Pittman Jr., Zach Pascal, Parris Campbell, Marcus Johnson, Ashton Dulin
Tight Ends (3): Jack Doyle, Trey Burton, Mo Alie-Cox
Offensive line (9): Anthony Castonzo, Quenton Nelson, Ryan Kelly, Mark Glowinski, Braden Smith, Le’Raven Clark, Javon Patterson, Jake Eldrenkamp, Danny Pinter
Defense & Special Teams (28)
Defensive ends (5): Justin Houston, Tyquan Lewis, Kemoko Turay, Ben Banogu, Al-Quadin Muhammad
Defensive tackles (5): DeForest Buckner, Grover Stewart, Denico Autry, Sheldon Day, Robert Windsor
Linebackers (5): Darius Leonard, Bobby Okereke, E.J. Speed, Zaire Franklin, Anthony Walker
Cornerbacks (5): Kenny Moore, Rock Ya-Sin, Xavier Rhodes, T.J. Carrie, Isaiah Rodgers
Safeties (5): Malik Hooker, Khari Willis, Tavon Wilson, Julian Blackmon, George Odum
Specialist (3): Chase McLaughlin, Rodrigo Sanchez, Luke Rhodes
And for those who got cut, here is a projection of the 16-man practice squad:
