The window for teams to apply the franchise tag officially opens Tuesday and while the Indianapolis Colts aren’t expected to use it, there are several potential targets in free agency who may be subject to the tag.
With roughly $43 million in salary-cap space to work with after factoring in the Carson Wentz trade, the Colts have the money to spend in free agency if some of these big names don’t receive the tag. So those who do get tagged will have an impact on what kind of market the Colts are looking at in free agency.
Teams have until March 9 to apply the franchise tag to a pending free agent. Once that is done, the player can sign the tender or the team can work on a long-term extension until mid-summer.
