Philip Rivers Says He Has Not “Completely Ruled Out” An NFL Comeback

A 17-season Philip Rivers era in the NFL came to an end with his retirement earlier this year — or so we thought.

According to recent reports from the Los Angeles Times, Rivers, who now coaches high school football in Alabama, has not “completely ruled out” a return to the league.

“I’m not predicting I will play in December or January, for that matter,” he said. “One, you’ve got to have somebody who wants you, and two, it’s got to be right.

“But I have not completely ruled that out.”

The 39 year old’s best chance at an NFL return would likely come with the team he retired from in 2020.

Just last week, Rivers’ quarterback replacement Carson Wentz suffered a foot injury during Colts training camp practice. With Wentz expected to miss somewhere between five and 12 weeks in recovery from surgery, the Indianapolis franchise could possibly use a plug-and-play veteran with knowledge of the system like Rivers.

Following 16 years with the San Diego/Los Angeles Chargers, Rivers made his way to Indianapolis for what was thought to be the final year of his NFL career. Through the 2020 season, the eight-time Pro Bowler led the Colts to an 11-5 record behind 4,169 yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions on 68% completion.

Barring an unexpected NFL comeback, Rivers will continue with his current position as head coach of the St. Michael Catholic High School football team in Fairhope, Alabama.
