Once again the Indianapolis Colts find themselves with uncertainty at quarterback. But apparently the Colts had a chance to land the reigning Super Bowl champion quarterback: Matthew Stafford.
Appearing on The Pat McAfee Show, NFL insider Peter Schrager revealed that there was interest from Stafford in going to the Colts. But the Colts were apparently not willing to make the Detroit Lions a good enough offer to acquire him.
“Stafford was willing to be a Colt last year,” Schrager said. “He was willing to go to the Colts… But they didn’t go over the top to go get Matthew Stafford last year. It was more ‘Hey, Frank Reich and Carson Wentz can go do this.’”
McAfee was distraught, pointing out that the last two quarterbacks to win Super Bowls – Tom Brady and Stafford – were both linked to the Colts at some point. But his favorite team wound up going with Philip Rivers and Carson Wentz – with unremarkable results.

As for Matthew Stafford, he went on to enjoy one of the best seasons of his career. He threw for 4,886 yards and 41 touchdowns while leading the Rams to a 12-5 record and led them to a Super Bowl.
The Colts not only showed more interest in Carson Wentz than Matthew Stafford last offseason, but it now cost them a legit shot at Russell Wilson too. I feel ill.

Colts Probably should have at least given Stafford a look

Meanwhile, the Colts went 8-9 with Wentz going 8-8 as a starter despite having one of his best seasons. After missing the playoffs, the Colts traded him to the Washington Commanders.
Clearly the Colts have missed out on some golden opportunities to get back into Super Bowl contention over the past couple of years.
Will they correct that mistake with whoever they acquire to play quarterback this year?
