Jelani Woods named Colts' biggest steal from 2022 NFL draft

May 22, 2022 by Colts Wire

After getting one of their blue-chip prospects in the second round, the Indianapolis Colts couldn’t believe it when another one in the form of tight end Jelani Woods was available in the third round.

While Woods has some development to work through, the upside is immense. His ceiling is extremely high, and it’s why our friends over at Draft Wire listed him as the team’s biggest steal from the draft.

At 6-foot-7 and 253 pounds, Woods is already a gigantic human being—even for NFL standards. In fact, head coach Frank Reich mentioned that Woods appears even bigger in person when he attended the rookie minicamp.

While that size certainly makes Woods unique in his own right, it doesn’t stop there. The Virginia product posted a 4.61 in the 40-yard dash while adding a 37.5-inch vertical and a broad jump of 10″9′. All three were considered elite by the Relative Athletic Score metric.

So not only is he the size of a house, but he also moves like a much smaller athlete.

There will be some development that needs to take place. Becoming a more sound blocker is among the first objectives. The Colts see a future where Woods is the starting Y tight end, which means Woods will need to make blocking a big part of his game.

It will be interesting to see how involved the third-round pick will be during his rookie season, but Woods has arguably the highest potential in the class for the Colts.
