Is DeVon Achane Playing Week 1? Dolphins Injury Update Gives Clues

September 1, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

The Miami Dolphins are preparing for their Week 1 matchup against the Indianapolis Colts, and they may not have running back DeVon Achane when the season begins. A former third-round pick, the Texas A&M product established himself as a key part of Miami’s offense last year, finishing the campaign with a combined 1,499 yards and 12 touchdowns. While he will be the unquestioned lead back as long as he’s healthy, the third-year pro has battled a calf injury over the past few weeks.

Fortunately, this injury shouldn’t keep him off the field for Week 1. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, DeVon Achane is returning to practice and “is on track to play” for the Dolphins on Sunday.

Will Dolphins DeVon Achane Play In Week 1? Latest Injury News Revealed

The Miami Dolphins better hope that DeVon Achane can play in Week 1, as they don’t have much depth on the roster. Normal backup Jaylen Wright underwent surgery for a leg injury that will keep him sidelined for multiple weeks, so rookie Ollie Gordon will likely be the next man up if something happens to Achane. However, they also have veterans Jeff Wilson and JaMycal Hasty on the practice squad, and either player could be promoted on game day if necessary.

Achane is one of the league’s better dual-threat backs and a perfect fit for head coach Mike McDaniels’ offense. After splitting time with veteran Raheem Mostert in 2022, the third-round pick earned the full-time job in 2024 and never looked back. Appearing in all 17 games, Achane recorded 907 rushing yards and six touchdowns on 203 attempts (4.5 yards per carry) while adding another 78 receptions for 592 yards and six touchdowns through the air. If healthy, his ability to make plays as a receiver and a runner should help mitigate the effect of Miami’s subpar offensive line.
