The Indianapolis Colts made the big move to trade for Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz on Thursday, and now it’s time to look at the ripple effect.

Not only do the Colts have to give up a 2021 third-round pick and a conditional 2022 second, which could turn into a first, but now they have to pay Wentz as well.

While the Eagles will take on the biggest dead cap in NFL history ($33.8 million) for the 2020 season, the Colts will now take a hit on their cap as well. In 2020, the Colts will owe Wentz a $10 million roster bonus and $15.4 million in salary. So the Colts will take a cap hit of $25.4 million in 2020.

Because we don’t know what the salary cap limit is, it’s hard to say exactly how much cap space they will have. The floor will be $180 million and with that, Over The Cap has the Colts projected for just over $68 million in salary cap space, the second-most in the NFL.

So with that, the Colts would have roughly $43 million to work with in salary cap space if the league settles on a $180 million limit.

The Colts still have some contract extensions to dish out this offseason so it will be interesting to see how active Chris Ballard is when free agency arrives in mid-March.
