Former NFL GM Has Trade Suggestion For The Colts

Heading into the 2021 season, the Indianapolis Colts were looking forward to new beginnings under recently-acquired quarterback Carson Wentz. Unfortunately, that preseason excitement came to a screeching halt in a training camp practice last week.

Rolling out and planting his foot to throw during practice on Thursday, Wentz reportedly felt a “twinge in his foot” as broken bone was knocked loose. On Monday, head coach Mark Reich said the injury stems from an older issue, possibly dating back to high school, per Sports Illustrated.

Requiring surgery to fix the injury, Wentz is expected to be out for the next five to 12 weeks.

With a possible absence for their starting QB through a significant chunk of the 2021 season, the Colts may need to start exploring other backup options. As of right now, second-year quarterback Jacob Eason, who’s yet to log a single stat in the NFL, is set to be the Week 1 starter.

During an appearance on ESPN’s Get Up on Tuesday, former New York Jets GM Mike Tannenbaum gave his suggestion to the Indianapolis front office.

Citing Wentz’ prior injury history, Tannenbaum feels the Colts should trade for Bears QB Nick Foles as soon as possible.

“Carson Wentz has finished one season healthy as a QB where he started the season and ended the season,” he said. “…If I’m the Colts, I’m going to do everything within reason to make sure that, over a 17-game marathon, that I have somebody else there besides Jacob Eason.”

After Wentz suffered a torn ACL back in 2017, Foles took over as QB1 for Philadelphia — leading the team on a 3-0 postseason run en route to a Super Bowl victory.

Since then though, he’s struggled as a fringe QB1/backup. In 2019, he fought for time with Jaguars quarterback Gardner Minshew. This past season, he split starting reps with Bears QB Mitch Trubisky.

ESPN analyst Dan Orlovsky vehemently disagreed with Tannenbaum’s suggestion.

“Stop constantly correlating Nick Foles with Carson Wentz, and [thinking] it’s a better option.”

If all goes well with Wentz’ surgery and recovery, his missed time could be limited to just one or two games in the 2021 season.
