Former Colts Second-Round Pick Likely to “Audition” for New Team

September 6, 2025 by Last Word On Pro Football

With the Colts getting ready for their Week 1 matchup, the Indianapolis Colts’ wide receiver, Alec Pierce, could audition for a new team this 2025 regular season. According to a source, the Colts may have competition for their impending free agent of next year, as the wide receiver is a part of one of the deepest pass-catching groups in the league. With Adonai Mitchell probably going to step up, this means fewer snaps for Pierce, given that Michael Pittman Jr. and Josh Downs have already carved out their starting roles in this offense. Pierce became one of the biggest offensive contributors last year, recording 37 receptions for 824 receiving yards and seven touchdowns.

It’s no secret that he will receive interest next offseason, which is why the Colts need to decide sooner rather than later about his future. What’s interesting is that Pierce may not get the same attention in the aerial attack after the Colts named veteran Daniel Jones the starter for the Colts. Jones has been less aggressive than Joe Flacco and Anthony Richardson, so this might mean bad news for Pierce, who might be looking to add more explosivity to his resume. If the new quarterback shift no longer fits for the wide receiver, then it means the Colts will have no other choice but to trade him at some point so they can get some draft capital in return.

Former Colts Second-Round Pick Alec Pierce Likely to “Audition” for New Team – 3 Possible Fits

Potential Destinations

Los Angeles Chargers

The Los Angeles Chargers are getting younger in the wide receiver unit, other than veteran Keenan Allen. They must figure out a way to get some consistency going in the aerial attack, as Justin Herbert is still a top 5 quarterback in the league. He can’t thrive like he wants if he doesn’t get the most explosive receivers, but since he’s been able to bring out something fiery in 2024 draft pick Ladd McConkey, he might be able to do the same with Pierce. With Quentin Johnston still lacking like a true weapon, they need someone who can align the same skillsets as McConkey can in the slot.

The perfect receiver for that role is Pierce. He can create some separation and give Herbert another speedy playmaker who can fight for yardage and make the big plays.

Baltimore Ravens

Meanwhile, the Baltimore Ravens have one of the league’s best receiver units between DeAndre Hopkins, Zay Flowers and Rashod Bateman. However, when you’re without tight end Isaiah Likely to start Week 1 against Buffalo, you might need to get another weapon in the slot. Pierce may not have the size, but he has the same elusiveness and speed that Bateman and Flowers can come together as reliable weapons for Lamar Jackson.

Dallas Cowboys

After a close loss to the Eagles in Week 1, it’s clear that the Cowboys might need another weapon in the aerial attack. It might be early to tell, but when Dak Prescott was targeting CeeDee Lamb for most of his snaps, where was George Pickens? Perhaps Pierce could create some space and get Pickens in the right situation, unlike Jalen Tolbert, who had a quiet game.
