The Indianapolis Colts received some bad news about quarterback Carson Wentz just a few days into training camp.
Wentz underwent foot surgery and was expected to miss the five to 12 weeks, as a result, according to head coach Frank Reich. The Colts were obviously hoping for the shorter end of that timeline.
Well, it appears the team found exactly what it wanted. According to a report from ESPN insider Chris Mortensen, Wentz is “trending” to be ready for the start of the 2021 season.
“Good vibes all around the Colts,” Mortensen started. “Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger are competing for the backup role. Yes, the backup role. Carson Wentz trending to open the season as the starter with All-Pro G Quenton Nelson on same path after foot surgeries. The Colts open season vs. Seahawks.”

Jacob Eason and Sam Ehlinger had been competing for reps to be the starting quarterback in camp this week. Ehlinger, a sixth-round pick by the Colts just a few months ago, was reportedly taking first-team reps this week.
While it must be nice for Ehlinger and Eason to finally start receiving reps, it seems like they won’t have the opportunity to fight for the starting job.
For the Colts, though, it is great news that Wentz might be able to start the season. He gives the team the best opportunity to win.
