With the 2025 NFL season winding down, draft talks are heating up. The Indianapolis Colts are in a tough spot when it comes to the next 2 drafts. They traded their next 2 first-round picks to the New York Jets for corner Sauce Gardner at this year’s deadline. Now, many people think you can’t draft a franchise-level quarterback outside of the first round. However, that’s not entirely true. There have been many high-level quarterbacks taken outside the first round. Names like Tom Brady (6th), Joe Montana (3rd), Dak Prescott (4th), and Jalen Hurts (2nd). Each one of these quarterbacks was vital to their respective franchises’ success. So why can’t the Colts do the same? Well, turns out, they can. Drew Allar, quarterback out of Penn State, could be a perfect draft choice for the Colts in the second round.

Drew Allar May Be a Perfect Draft Choice for the Colts.
Penn State Standout
Drew Allar had a pretty successful career at Penn State. He played 45 games with a 63.2 completion percentage, 7,402 passing yards, and 61 touchdowns. Allar led the Nittany Lions to the Big 10 Championship game last season, but they ultimately lost to Oregon. He then got Penn State into the College Football Playoff, beat Boise State, but then lost to Notre Dame in the Orange Bowl. Allar started off the 2025 season well, but his season was cut short due to an ankle injury. With this ankle injury, many experts believe his draft stock will fall out of the first round, which is why Drew Allar could be a perfect pick for the Colts.
Mobile Pocket Passer
Allars’ player profile describes him as a “mobile pocket passer”. If Allar were to fall to the second round, his profile fits the Colts’ offensive scheme, which relies on the quarterback being able to move. They heavily rely on RPOs and play action bootlegs to move down the field. That is why Daniel Jones had so much success in the offense this season. A mobile quarterback who can rely on his arm to make plays. From what it seems, Allar and Jones can be compared with each other. Allar’s play style can also open up more avenues for Colts running back Jonathan Taylor, just as Jones did. Also with returning playmakers like Michael Pittman, Josh Downs, and former Penn State tight end Tyler Warren, Allar could see some massive offensive numbers in 2026. It also wouldn’t hurt to have Warren as that familiar target to rely on. The duo had 104 receptions for 1,233 yards and 12 touchdowns in Warren’s final year at Penn State.
Colts Current Quarterback Situation
The Colts drafting Drew Allar could also help solve their current quarterback situation. The Colts are unsure on what direction they are going to go at quarterback next season. They cannot rely on resigning Jones due to availability after the injury alone. Also, they still don’t exactly know what they have in former first-round pick Anthony Richardson. The relationship between Richardson and the Colts may also not be in a very good spot due to the Jones signing at the beginning of the year as well. Riley Leonard is another option for the Colts, but in all honesty, what would be the difference in playing him or possibly Allar next season? It should also be noted that the Colts definitely will not bring back their newest quarterback addition, 44-year-old Philip Rivers, to be the starter next season.
Say the Colts are to draft Allar. They could still start Richardson (if they don’t sign anyone), and have Allar sit behind him and let him develop that first year. If Richardson succeeds, great, but if not, Allar is there waiting for his shot at becoming the guy the following season. If the Colts were to go this route, it would be good to have Allar sit that first year just to take in the NFL experience. That could have been something that would have played well in Anthony Richardson’s career, but it’s too late for that now.
Next Franchise Guy
It is possible that the Colts aren’t even looking at the draft this year to find their quarterback answer. There’s also the possibility that the Colts come into next season with a whole new look as far as management goes. New general manager, new head coach, and the second year of what seems to be a resilient ownership group. The new staff could want a clean slate, meaning they want to go with a guy they drafted and developed to be the next franchise quarterback. Now, this goes against the point made earlier about how he fits into the current offensive scheme. However, many quarterbacks with Allars’ skillset can fit in with most offenses. So if Drew Allar is available in the second round when the Colts are on the board, he will definitely be worth the discussion.
