The big news dropped Thursday as the Indianapolis Colts agreed to trade with the Philadelphia Eagles for quarterback Carson Wentz.

As ESPN’s Adam Schefter reported, the compensation isn’t huge in 2021. The Colts will give up their third-round pick (No. 84 overall) and a conditional 2022 second-round pick.

The conditions of that trade state that the second-round pick turns into a first-round pick if Wentz plays at least 75% of snaps during the 2021 season or if Wentz plays 70% of snaps and the Colts make the playoffs. Suffice it to say, the Colts are likely to be without their 2022 first.

If Carson Wentz’s playtime is at or above 75% next season, the conditional 2022 second-round pick would become a first-round pick, per sources. The second-round pick also.could become a first if Wentz plays at least 70 percent of the plays and the Colts go to the playoffs.

This is a risk it seems the Colts are willing to take. After a disaster of a 2020 season, Frank Reich believes they can be the ones to get Wentz back on track. In 12 games before being benched for Jalen Hurts, Wentz completed 57.4% of his passes for 2,620 yards, 16 touchdowns and a league-leading 15 interceptions. His 82.5 passer rating from a clean pocket was 28th in the NFL among quarterbacks with at least 348 dropbacks, per Pro Football Focus.

The Colts got strong quarterback play from Philip Rivers in 2020, and they were able to reach the wild-card round. Wentz is likely going to have to play at that level for the Colts to return there, and Reich and Chris Ballard must be confident he can do so.

There is upside for Went to carry this offense. He thrived under Reich before and with the pieces around him, there is a chance he can be a reliable starter again.

But now, the Colts have to make sure the offensive line is ready to go and find as many pieces on offense for Wentz to work with.
