The Indianapolis Colts announced on Wednesday that the team has signed punter Austin Rehkow and tight end Andrew Vollert to the practice squad.
Rehkow was signed as an undrafted free agent by the Buffalo Bills (2017) and has also spent time with the New York Giants (2018), Alliance of American Football’s Salt Lake Stallions (2019), and XFL’s Houston Roughnecks (2020).
He was a 3x First-Team All-Sun Belt punter (2014-16) and 2x Second-Team All-Sun Belt kicker (2015-16) previously at Idaho.
Having released veteran Ryan Allen from their practice squad earlier this week, who filled in admirably for recovering starting punter Rigoberto Sanchez, Rehkow should serve as additional special teams insurance on the team’s taxi squad.
Meanwhile, the 6’5”, 245 pound Vollert is a familiar face for the Colts franchise, as he was previously claimed off waivers during this past August before being a part of the team’s final roster cuts a few weeks later.
He was originally signed as an undrafted free agent in 2018 out of Weber State by the Arizona Cardinals, but he’s also spent time with the Cincinnati Bengals, Los Angeles Chargers, and the Carolina Panthers during his early NFL career. He was a ‘Hard Knocks’ star for the Chargers during the 2019 offseason. However, he unfortunately suffered a torn ACL in the preseason of 2019 and missed the entirety of that season.
Having transferred from San Jose State, Vollert earned 2x All-American and 2x All-Big Sky honors during his 2-year collegiate career at Weber State (2016-17)—where he was also 2016 Big Sky Newcomer of the Year.
Vollert should serve as additional tight end depth, as both Mo Alie-Cox and Trey Burton have been battling knee injuries as of late—although both played last week.
