Colts select Miami QB Tyler Van Dyke in 2023 mock draft

May 6, 2022 by Colts Wire

Too early for a 2023 mock draft? Never.

Our friends over at Draft Wire may have just finished looking over the crop of 2022 selections, but that didn’t stop them from going through a “never-too-early” mock draft for 2023.

In this version, the Colts held the No. 20 overall pick in the first round. Four quarterbacks went ahead of Indy in this mock, leading them to select Miami’s Tyler Van Dyke.

Here’s what Luke Easterling had to say about making the pick for the Colts:

The Colts spent the 2022 draft building around Matt Ryan, but next year, they should think about drafting his eventual successor. Van Dyke’s draft stock is soaring after his performance last season, and he could go much higher than this if he keeps up that trajectory.

Listed at 6-foot-4 and 224 pounds, Van Dyke will be entering his redshirt sophomore season with the Hurricanes. In 2021, he completed 62.3% of his passes for 2,931 yards, 25 touchdowns and six interceptions across 10 games. He didn’t add much rushing to his numbers with 53 attempts for 57 yards and one touchdown.

The Colts used the 2022 draft class to build around current starter Matt Ryan, adding high-upside players like wide receiver Alec Pierce, tight end Jelani Woods and offensive tackle Bernhard Raimann.

Finding Ryan’s eventual successor will be imperative even if the veteran is in place for more than the next two seasons.

A lot will certainly change over the next calendar year, but the 2023 class at least has some promise when it comes to providing a robust group of quarterbacks.
