According to multiple league sources, the Indianapolis Colts have acquired former Philadelphia Eagles franchise quarterback Carson Wentz for a 2021 third round pick and a 2022 conditional second round pick (which can turn into a first round pick):

#Eagles have agreed to trade Carson Wentz to the #Colts for a 2021 third-rounder and a conditional second-rounder in 2022, as ESPN reported. Wentz headed for a reunion with Frank Reich.

However, we now know ‘the conditions’ of the 2022 conditional second round pick (via NFL Network’s Mike Garafolo):

The conditional second-rounder in 2022 becomes a first-rounder if Wentz plays 75 percent of the snaps or 70 percent and the team makes the playoffs. https://t.co/quAYwcz7bd

At first glance, this still seems like a win for Colts general manager Chris Ballard—as if Wentz is any good, it presumably means Indianapolis is in the playoffs, and he’s still starting.

If the second round pick elevates to a first round pick at that point in 2022, it sounds like Indianapolis would gladly take it because Wentz would be a solid starting answer behind center—in a league where talented passers are held at a premium.

In its eyes, Indianapolis has solidified the starting quarterback position for the near future—and if Wentz can return to his old form (with head coach Frank Reich), perhaps the Colts may have found their franchise passer again going forward long-term.
