Colts' Quenton Nelson, Darius Leonard playing through injuries

September 18, 2021 by Colts Wire Leave a Comment

It’s only Week 2 of the regular season, but the injury report for the Indianapolis Colts is littered top to bottom with impact players. Among them are captains Quenton Nelson and Darius Leonard.

Both players are currently dealing with ailments of their own. But it appears they are going to play through them as much as they can in Week 2 and beyond until they physically cannot continue.

Nelson popped up on the injury report in Week 1 with a back injury, something he’s been dealing with for a few years off and on. He’s questionable for Sunday’s matchup against the Los Angeles Rams, but he’s expected to play.

“I had it fricking great going into camp, and through camp, and when I came back, there was this one incident that I can’t really talk about too much that triggered it,” Nelson said. “It came back.”

Nelson will draw a tough matchup against Aaron Donald on Sunday and while they won’t line up across from each other for every snap, the back injury does make an already tough matchup evern tougher.

As for Leonard, he played through an ankle injury in Week 1. He popped up surprisingly on the final injury report before the season opener but was able to play. He didn’t practice at all this week until Friday but doesn’t have an injury designation entering the weekend.

“As good as I’m going to (feel), it is what it is,” Leonard told the media Friday. “I’m going to just go out there and continue to do what I can do until it gets to a point where I feel like I can’t.”

The matchup against the Rams isn’t going to be easy on either side of the ball and it will be compounded by the fact that these two captains are playing through injury. Regardless, Leonard doesn’t want to use it as an excuse.

“It’s not 100,” Leonard said. “It’s not an excuse. You’ve got to go out and make things happen.”
