Colts’ quarterback Carson Wentz earns Pro Football Focus’ Offensive Player of the Week award.
Indianapolis Colts’ quarterback Carson Wentz has earned Pro Football Focus’ Offensive Player of the Week award.
Wentz’s numbers were solid Sunday, as he threw for 223 yards and 2 touchdowns. The Colts’ quarterback has also now gone four straight games without throwing an interception, which is one of the main reasons why the team’s offense has looked as dominant as it has over the last three weeks.
Where Wentz was really exceptional, though, was on play-action passes, as that’s where a majority of his big throws and both touchdowns passes came from Sunday afternoon.
Zach Hicks, a Lead Colts Analyst for Sports Illustrated, compiled all of Wentz’s play-action passes in a short video below. As Hicks mentions, Wentz’s play-action passes were one strike after another.

During the last three games, Wentz has thrown for 853 yards, including a career-high 402 yards against the Baltimore Ravens, 6 passing touchdowns, 0 interceptions and has an overall QBR of 123.8.
The Colts are, in part, are winning because of Wentz’s play this season. Through six weeks, Wentz has thrown for 1,545 yards, 9 touchdowns and only 1 interception. Seattle Seahawks’ quarterback Russell Wilson is the only other quarterback who has 1 interception on the season.
“Carson’s been really good,” head coach Frank Reich said after Sunday’s victory over the Houston Texans.
Reich also spoke on Wentz’s seasonal performance thus far and the things the Colts’ quarterback has done really well.
“He can be a big-play machine,” Reich said. “I like the way he’s taking care of the football; I like the way he’s handling the game; just being in control out there, and trusting his guys to make the big plays; making good decisions and being accurate with the ball, especially down the field, which he’s been off the charts.”
Sure, Wentz hasn’t been perfect, but he’s played about as well as the Colts could’ve hoped for so far. Indy’s offense is completely different from what we’ve seen that last couple of seasons.
Wentz provides the Colts with a completely different type of quarterback — one who can extend plays with his feet and create chunk plays down the field, which is what we’ve seen more from this offense over the last three weeks.
Fans know all too well that the team’s quarterback situation the last couple of years has been a revolving door, which is why the organization made the trade for Wentz. The Colts weren’t interested in any more temporary solutions at quarterback.
As Wentz continues to improve throughout each week, it’s looking more and more like the Colts could finally have their answer at quarterback for years to come.
