Indianapolis, IN — Indianapolis Colts head coach Shane Steichen revealed to local media today that third-year quarterback Anthony Richardson is dealing with a shoulder injury and will not participate in mini-camp next week.
Richardson reaggravated the same A/C joint he had surgery on in 2023 and began feeling pain after last Thursday’s practice. Although a procedure is not anticipated, this injury in question will keep him out indefinitely. The hope is that Richardson will return to action sometime during training camp.
Per ESPN’s Stephen Holder, “There is no need for surgery according to the doctors. Richardson just reported some soreness and the prescription for right is rest.”
This is a devastating blow to Indy’s already uninspiring quarterback room, but especially to Anthony Richardson’s professional career. Not even in his third year in the NFL, Richardson has already dealt with a plethora of injuries: hip sprain, shoulder A/C joint sprain, concussion, chronic lower back issue, and now a second sprain to the same A/C joint.
The experiment is not officially over yet, though the outlook is as bleak as ever for Anthony Richardson’s time in Indianapolis. Athleticism and potential only mean so much when the old adage of, “the best ability is availability” is a prevalent reminder.
The Colts hope that Anthony Richardson is fully recovered for their Week 1 matchup in September against the Miami Dolphins, however, with that much time between now and then, therein lies a reality where Daniel Jones is the Colts’ Week 1 starter for the 2025-26 season.
