Colts' Philip Rivers undecided on future

January 10, 2021 by Colts Wire Leave a Comment

The Indianapolis Colts wrapped up their season Saturday with a 27-24 loss against the Buffalo Bills in the wild-card round and now the offseason approaches with many decisions.

One of the biggest decisions comes in the form of a player’s desire to continue playing. Quarterback Philip Rivers will be a free agent this offseason and is currently undecided on whether he wants to return for 2021.

“No, it’s not that easy. I don’t go this route with an answer often, but I think this sums it up: whatever God’s will is for me and my family – if it’s here, in Indy playing another year then we’ll be here,” Rivers said after the game Saturday. “If it’s not I’ll be on a sideline somewhere – I know where, I’ll be on the sideline with a ball cap coaching the heck out of a high school football team down in south Alabama.”

Rivers was impressive during his one season with the Colts. He completed 68% of his passes for 4,156 passing yards, 24 touchdowns and 11 interceptions. He capped off his playoff game with 309 passing yards and two touchdowns.

Making this kind of decision is never easy, especially when it comes to a competitor like Rivers. We likely won’t know for a while whether he wants to return for another season.

“Whatever God’s will is what I want to happen and I’ll be fine with that,” Rivers said. “Obviously, if I keep going – if I go on and on with that answer it will be nothing but a bunch of emotion talking, but I think that at the end of the day, that’s clearly what will guide the decision.”

The Colts have said they want Rivers back for 2021. Frank Reich said that following the playoff loss on Saturday. It would give them a chance to continue trying to win but it wouldn’t hinder their ability to grab another younger quarterback to compete with Jacob Eason.

It remains to be seen what the future holds for Rivers, but this will certainly be a storyline to keep an eye on this offseason.
