Colts' offensive triplet ranked 15th by CBS Sports

May 28, 2022 by Colts Wire

The Indianapolis Colts enter the 2022 season with a solid core of offensive playmakers, and the hope is that the addition of quarterback Matt Ryan will provide even more explosiveness to the unit as a whole.

When looking at the offense, though, we tend to look at the top of the depth chart. A unit may only be as strong as its weakest link, but its ceiling is carried by its star players.

In ranking the offensive triplets of every team in the NFL, the Colts came in at No. 15 in the eyes of CBS Sports.

15. Indianapolis Colts (Avg: 15.5, High: 14, Low: 18)

QB: Matt Ryan RB: Jonathan Taylor WR: Michael Pittman

It appears our crowd thinks Ryan’s down season was a result of the infrastructure around him in Atlanta, and not a steep decline in his own ability. At least, that’s what I’m reading into this. The Colts had a very narrow range of rankings, with basically everyone considering them an approximately league-average trio. With perhaps the best running back in the league and a wide receiver who showed great strides in Year 2, there is potential for more if Ryan rediscovers his prior form.

The Colts enjoyed Year 2 breakouts from their pair of 2022 second-round picks in Jonathan Taylor and Michael Pittman Jr. despite missing the playoffs.

Taylor led the NFL in rushing yards (1,811) and rushing touchdowns (18), among other stats, while Pittman Jr. eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark for the first time in his career.

The Colts are hoping Ryan will be the key to unlocking their full potential in 2022 and beyond. While Carson Wentz was fine for their stats, Ryan may be even better for someone like Pittman Jr. considering his ability to set up yards-after-catch potential—an area that Wentz struggled with during his season with the Colts.

We’ll see how far the Colts offense can go with Ryan at the helm, but they are set up pretty nicely if a few other pieces fall into place on the offensive line and at the tight end position.
