INDIANAPOLIS – The Indianapolis Colts anticipate Anthony Richardson Sr. being available at some point this season after he underwent surgery on Monday to repair a fractured orbital bone.
The surgery was reported by NFL Network. Coach Shane Steichen was asked about Richardson’s status on Friday – he was placed on the injured reserve list Oct. 13 – but that was before it was known publicly he had had surgery.
“I know he’s just recovering right now,’’ he said.
A source with knowledge of the situation said the Colts are hoping to get Richardson back this season.
The No. 4 overall pick in the 2023 draft fractured the orbital bone during his pre-game warmup prior to the Arizona Cardinals game, while he was working with a resistance band.
Richardson had been serving as Daniel Jones’ backup after Jones won the preseason competition for the starting quarterback position.
With Jones, the Colts are off to an NFL-best 6-1 record, their best start since 2009.
Rookie Riley Leonard will continue to serve as Jones’ backup for the time being. The Colts also have veteran Brett Rypien on the practice squad.
Indy is looking to push its record to 7-1 Sunday afternoon against the Tennessee Titans at Lucas Oil Stadium.
