Colts Head Coach Frank Reich on Carson Wentz, Quenton Nelson: ‘They’re Doing Exceedingly Well’ in Recovery

According to their head coach Frank Reich, both Indianapolis Colts starting quarterback Carson Wentz and offensive guard Quenton Nelson are “doing exceedingly well” coming off recent offseason foot surgeries respectively.

However, the team is ‘a week away’ from really determining exactly where they’re at in each’s recovery timeline—as Reich also cautioned that it’s still early:

“I mean I don’t mind telling you, they’re doing exceedingly well,” Reich said on Wednesday via NFL Network. “I mean, but it is still early.”

“Right, but all indications at this point, for what you would hope for at this point from them, we’re getting that, plus. So you can’t really tell until you get out there, and test it. We know we’re a week or so away from that happening at a more significant level, but all signs are pretty positive right now.”

“Now, where that comes out, whether it’s Week 1, 2, we don’t know, but we’ll find out soon enough.”

While both Wentz and Nelson have been watching the Colts recent training camp practices ‘bootless’, each player will begin their formal rehabilitation in around a week—for a recovery timetable that was initially stated as anywhere from 5 to 12 weeks.

That should give the Colts a better idea of where they’re at—as far as a realistic return goes.

It coincides with an earlier report from ESPN’s Chris Mortensen which suggested that Wentz and Nelson were ‘trending’ towards a surprising Week 1 return.

That being said, this should all be taken with a grain of salt.

Sure, the early signs are no doubt encouraging, but there’s a difference between walking around at practice and trying to block/escape from the Los Angeles Rams’ Aaron Donald barreling down on you during Week 2 of the regular season.

It wouldn’t be surprising if the Colts err on the side of caution either, when it comes to two critical players for the long-term success of both the franchise and the upcoming season. That could mean sitting them an additional week or two to ensure each is fully healthy—or at least not risking it all from the initial get-go.
