Colts have plan to monitor QB Anthony Richardson’s sore shoulder until training camp

There’s a plan in place for the Colts until camp kicks off…

According to head coach Shane Steichen, the Indianapolis Colts have a plan in place to monitor 3rd-year quarterback Anthony Richardson’s sore right throwing shoulder over the next six weeks until NFL training camp begins (via The IndyStar’s Nate Atkins):

Shane Steichen on how he’ll monitor Anthony Richardson Sr.’s shoulder these next six weeks:

“We’ll have a plan. Obviously, he’s got his trainers in Florida. We got our trainers here. We’ll have a detailed plan going into this offseason, but we’ll be in contact via phone.”

The status of Richardson’s surgically right repaired throwing shoulder is a big question mark already facing the 2025 Colts before the regular season (and even camp) has even begun.

While Richardson sought another medical opinion earlier this week from Dr. Neal ElAttrache, the renowned L.A. based surgeon who initially performed Richardson’s shoulder surgery back in October of 2023 to repair a sprained A/C joint, the continued prognosis remains rest and recovery for the oft-injured young quarterback.

Richardson was forced to shut it down just after Day 2 of the team’s recent OTAs and has not participated in the team’s minicamp this week.

Instead, it’s been veteran free agent addition Daniel Jones, who has assumed the Colts QB1 duties and now appears to have a leg up on Richardson regarding the ongoing publicly open Indianapolis starting quarterback competition.

Jones’ initial lead in this two-horse quarterback race may only grow if Richardson is limited in early training camp upon his hopeful return—as it’s quite possible he may initially be restricted to a ‘pitch count’ throwing the football again to build up his arm strength and conditioning to deter additional throwing shoulder soreness from arising again.
