Colts Capology: LT Anthony Castonzo’s Retirement is a Major Blow, But Frees Up Some Extra Salary Cap Space

With their longtime blindside bookend Anthony Castonzo having called it a career, the Indianapolis Colts did receive at least some positive news on the afternoon—as big A.C.’s retirement will clear up $16M of additional cap space for general manager Chris Ballard’s squad for this upcoming offseason:

Anthony Castonzo walks away from the #NFL after 10 seasons w/ the #Colts, earning $76.25M for his efforts.

That means that the Colts now have a projected $72.7M of total cap space at the franchise’s disposal—although I’m sure the franchise would’ve gladly traded that extra wiggle room for having a healthy Castonzo back for one more final season.

Alas, Castonzo has hung up his football cleats for good and the Colts are now without a rock solid starting veteran left tackle.

However, his retirement does provide the team greater flexibility to shore up the roster potentially elsewhere—even if it’s not exactly at Castonzo’s former position (as proven left tackle options typically don’t hit free agency).

Regardless of what happens, the offensive tackle replacing Castonzo will have some big shoes to fill in 2021—although the Colts do have some extra salary cap space in their pocket now to work with.
