Colts All-Pro LB Zaire Franklin unavailable for start of team’s training camp

The Colts defense will be without their starting All-Pro linebacker for at least the initial start of team training camp.

According to All-Pro Indianapolis Colts linebacker Zaire Franklin, he’ll be unavailable for the start of the team’s training camp (which veterans officially reported on Tuesday)—as he’s still recovering from an earlier offseason ankle cleanup procedure (via The Athletic’s James Boyd):

It does sound like Franklin is progressing, and he could be a candidate for preseason PUP.

During 17 starts this past season, Franklin recorded a league-leading 173 total tackles (93 solo), 3.5 sacks, 2 interceptions, 6 passes defensed, and 5 forced fumbles—earning his first career NFL 2nd-Team All-Pro and Pro Bowl honors.

His loss would be a considerable one for the Colts linebacking corps.

Specifically, the team saw former starter E.J. Speed depart to the Houston Texans in free agency, while the Colts new projected starter Jaylon Carlies is also recovering from offseason surgery—only to his once injured shoulder. His initial availability is unclear.

The Colts lack a wealth of proven depth behind Franklin and Carlies, as their defense also saw backup and core special teamer Grant Stuard sign with the Detroit Lions earlier this offseason. Top backup Segun Olubi would be projected to fill a prominent role in relief of either one of Franklin or Carlies out there.

The team did sign former Cincinnati Bengals special teamer Joe Bachie at the position.

Hopefully, Franklin returns to the starting lineup sooner rather than later for Colts camp.
