In version 2.0 of Mel Kiper’s 2025 NFL mock draft over at ESPN, the Indianapolis Colts tackle arguably their biggest need this offseason.
In Kiper’s first mock draft, the Colts landed Penn State tight end Tyler Warren. However, this time around, Warren went top 10, so the Colts instead selected Georgia safety Malaki Starks.
Safety is, of course, a huge need for the Colts, but early-round options could be limited. On Daniel Jeremiah’s recent top 50 big board, only two safeties made the list.
Starks, however, would be a very good fit for Lou Anarumo’s scheme that prioritizes versatility and the ability to disguise coverages. We should also expect to see more Cover-1 looks from Indianapolis under Anarumo as well.
Starks lined up all over the defensive backfield at Georgia and brings a well-rounded skill set to the NFL level, able to help out in the run, along with making plays in coverage.
“This is a good fit, with an obvious need for a ball-hawking safety on the back end of the Colts’ defense. Julian Blackmon is a free agent,” wrote Kiper. “And Starks — who picked off six passes across three seasons — can make an instant impact.”
With there being just a few high-end safety prospects in this year’s class, along with a lot being put on the plate of this position group in Anarumo’s defense, I wouldn’t be surprised if GM Chris Ballard opts for experience and addresses this need in free agency.
