Chris Ballard: Colts aren't a Super Bowl team right now

February 6, 2021 by Colts Wire Leave a Comment

The ultimate goal for every team is to get to the Super Bowl and win a championship. The same goes for the Indianapolis Colts even if their window to do so may not be right now.

Though general manager Chris Ballard thought the Colts had a chance this season with Philip Rivers under center, his retirement has cast some doubt on whether Indy is ready to compete for a Super Bowl with their current roster.

As Ballard put it during Friday’s interview with Dan Dakich on 1070 The Fan, he doesn’t believe the Colts are a Super Bowl team at the moment.

“Do I think we have a lot of talent? Yes. Do I think we are a Super Bowl team right now? No. There’s too many questions in play here,” Ballard said. “But we have time. We have free agency. We have the draft. We don’t play until September 9th or 10th. There’s a lot of time between now and then.”

It makes sense. It’s hard to be a team bound for the Super Bowl without a quarterback. Maybe that notion changes depending on who is behind center in 2021 but as it stands now, the Colts aren’t in their window to win a championship.

That said, the core of the roster is set and while they have work to do, Ballard believes the roster is close.

“Well, we have work to do. We have a lot of good players. We have a lot of good, young players on this team, under the age of 26, which is exciting,” Ballard said. “So we have a good, core in place. But we still have work to do.”

This will be a big offseason for the Colts. They have several needs at big positions like quarterback, left tackle, cornerback and defensive end. That sounds more like a rebuilding team than one ready to compete in the Super Bowl.

But if they find the right pieces, they should be in the mix for a playoff spot. It’s too early to tell how close they will be, though, and it’s best to wait until the offseason is over to determine what the ceiling might be for this team.

It should make for a fun offseason given all the moves the Colts have to make, but it’s clear Ballard doesn’t see this roster as a championship-winning unit until more pieces are added.
