Carson Wentz will be Frank Reich’s 4th starting QB in 4 years with Colts

February 18, 2021 by Colts Wire Leave a Comment

The quarterback carousel for the Indianapolis Colts continues after they agreed to trade a pair of draft picks to the Philadelphia Eagles quarterback Carson Wentz.

With Wentz now entrenched as the quarterback, he will be the fourth starting quarterback in the four seasons that Frank Reich has been the head coach of the Colts.

  • 2018: Andrew Luck
  • 2019: Jacoby Brissett
  • 2020: Philip Rivers
  • 2021: Carson Wentz

Some of this has been mitigated by the fact that Reich has coached two of the quarterbacks previously. He had extensive history with Rivers before 2020 and was one of the big reasons Wentz played at a near MVP-like level in 2017.

Regardless, the Colts are taking a big risk. They feel they have the system and coaching staff in place to correct the major issues that befell him during the 2020 season.

The Colts thought they had a franchise quarterback in Luck. His sudden retirement shocked the world but the Colts were back in the playoffs two years later with Rivers. The Brissett experience didn’t work and now he will be a free agent.

The duties now fall to Wentz, who will be looking to recover from a tumultuous 2020 campaign. The Colts will have to make sure Wentz has the best supporting cast possible, otherwise, what was the point of doing the trade?

And Reich will have to work his magic with the fourth new starting quarterback in as many years.
