Carson Wentz trade: Here are the conditions for the draft picks

February 18, 2021 by Colts Wire Leave a Comment

The Indianapolis Colts agreed to part ways with a pair of draft picks in a trade to acquire quarterback Carson Wentz from the Philadelphia Eagles, but it came with some conditions.

The Colts agreed to give up their 2021 third-round pick (No. 85 overall) and a conditional 2022 second-round pick that could turn into a first-round pick, per ESPN’s Adam Schefter.

The third-round pick is locked in. But the 2022 second-rounder turns into a first-round pick if Wentz plays at least 75% of the snaps or plays at least 70% of the snaps and the Colts make the playoffs.

So the Colts get to keep their first and second-round picks in 2021 but could miss out on a 2022 first if Wentz lives up to their hopes. However, if Wentz does return to form under Frank Reich, the Colts should be okay with parting ways with a first-round pick.

The Colts will also be taking on the remainder of Wentz’s contract, which includes a $25.4 million salary-cap hit in 2021.

This is a big risk the Colts are taking, but it appears they have confidence that the support staff in Reich, Press Taylor and Mike Groh have what it takes to make him a reliable starter again.

Expect Ballard to find a way to get that 2021 third-round pick back before April’s draft arrives this offseason.
