As first reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, Indianapolis Colts’ starting quarterback Carson Wentz will have surgery to remove a bone in his foot, per head coach Frank Reich:

That was fast. #Colts QB Carson Wentz will have surgery to repair his foot, per coach Frank Reich. He’s out up to 12 weeks, but could be much less. They will remove a bone in his foot.

The goal for Carson Wentz was to stay on the field and rehab. That likely would have prolonged the inevitable. Surgery is smart, thought it likely causes him to miss the start of the season. https://t.co/EYTpAJcqnV

Wentz suffered the injury in training camp on Thursday and was expected to try and rest and rehabilitate his foot before making a final decision on surgery.

The expected timeframe for his recovery is somewhere in between 5-12 weeks. With Week 1 of the NFL season just five weeks away, his status for the first few weeks remains cloudy.

It also does not help that the Colts have five very tough outings to open up the 2021-22 season, with matchups against the Seahawks, Rams, Titans, Dolphins, and Ravens.

Backup quarterback Jacob Eason, a former 4th round pick out of Washington, is expected to take over the starting job while Wentz recovers.

With this injury, the 2022 conditional second rounder the Colts sent to the Eagles for Wentz will most likely not become a first round pick, as Wentz needs to play over 75 percent of the snaps, or over 70 percent AND the Colts to make the playoffs.
