Analyzing Colts' snap counts from Week 2 loss to Rams

September 20, 2021 by Colts Wire Leave a Comment

The Indianapolis Colts (0-2) find themselves among the winless teams following their 27-24 loss to the Los Angeles Rams (2-0) on Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium

The 0-2 start is a first for head coach Frank Reich since he took over the duties in 2018. The Colts are in the middle of a tough stretch of games to begin the season, and bouncing back is becoming more of a. necessity as each week passes.

Now that Week 2 has come and gone, let’s analyzing the snap counts on offense, defense and special teams:

Offense

Notes

  • In the backfield, Jonathan Taylor led the way with 30 snaps (45%) and 16 touches. Nyheim Hines was right behind him at 25 snaps (37%) but only saw two touches. Marlon Mack had some good run during the second half to the tune of 13 snaps (19%) for five touches.
  • LT Eric Fisher made his debut on Sunday playing 49 out of a possible 67 snaps (73%). When he was taken out of the rotation, Julién Davenport moved over from right tackle to replace Fisher while Matt Pryor filled in for Davenport.
  • WR Michael Pittman Jr. showed immense life on 60 snaps (90%). He recorded career-highs in targets (12), receptions (8) and yards (123). With Parris Campbell out, the Colts leaned heavily on rookie WR Mike Strachan as the third option, playing 51% of the snaps.
  • LB Matthew Adams got some work in at fullback for one play.

Defense & Special Teams

Notes

  • S Khari Willis, LB Bobby Okereke, S Julian Blackmon and LB Darius Leonard were the only players to see 100% of the snaps on defense.
  • Rookie DE Kwity Paye and Al-Quadin Muhammad continue to lead the rotation on the edge for the second week in a row. The duo, along with Tyquan Lewis, remained the only key edge rushers.
  • Speed rushers Kemoko Turay (19%) and Ben Banogu (7%) were both relegated to deep reserve roles in the NASCAR package.
  • CB Isaiah Rodgers was fourth in the rotation but saw an increase in snaps to from 11% in Week 1 to 31% in Week 2. He got things started with a 41-yard kick return to open the game.
  • The Colts didn’t use a third linebacker often as Zaire Franklin played just three snaps (5%) on defense.
  • On special teams, LBs Zaire Franklin and Matthew Adams led the way at 85%. S George Odum led the way with three stops on special teams.
