As we begin the 2020 NFL season, a few questions have been answered in regards to several top quarterback spots that were up for grabs.
The first one being that of New England’s future Hall of Fame quarterback Tom Brady. For the first time in his entire NFL career, Brady was about to be a free agent. But as we all knew, that didn’t last too long.
AFC East fans rejoiced because Brady, as expected, signed with the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Buccaneers head coach Bruce Arians left no question that Tampa Bay would be a top contender in signing the six-time Super Bowl winner. This ended his two-decade stay with the Patriots.
The signing ended much speculation on where Brady would end his career. Not too long ago we discussed the possibilities of Brady riding off into the sunset with his six Super Bowl rings to a storybook ending. One source close to Brady’s father asked him years ago how he saw Tom ending his career. His father’s response wasn’t what you would think. Brady’s father said he fully expected his son’s time in New England to have an ugly conclusion.
“It will end badly,” he said. “It does end badly. And I know that because I know what Tommy wants to do. He wants to play till he’s 70. … It’s a cold business. And for as much as you want it to be familial, it isn’t.”
Sounds about right, and for now, Bruce Arians will take what he has left.

Another quarterback ending his long tenure was Los Angeles Chargers quarterback, Phillip Rivers. After spending 16 seasons with the Chargers, Rivers signed a one year contract with the Indianapolis Colts.
I wondered why the contract was only one year. Rivers said in a statement he felt he still could play at a high level, but he doesn’t see himself playing in his 40s like Tom Brady. He has ideas of coaching his son when he hits high school. His oldest son is 12.
Seems like the timing couldn’t be any better for both parties. Rivers gets another shot at the playoffs and the Super Bowl. The Colts get a seasoned veteran that will bring 16 years of experience to their organization, which I suspect they will use to groom another young quarterback via the draft. Colts general manager Chris Ballard said that Phillip is a fierce competitor and his veteran leadership will be crucial in the continued development of their young roster.
It’s going to be an interesting 2020 season. It will be beyond strange to see both of these long time quarterbacks in new colors. (Though I did do a couple of fist pumps when I heard about Brady)
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers and Indianapolis Colts will sure look like different teams come the 2020 season.
