Another tough loss to a Top 10 team in the country for Purdue.

In the midst of a lost season, Purdue is attempting to find any sort of positives to move forward with. Tonight’s game had none of those as they got blown out by #8 Maryland by a score of 88-59.

This game was not close from the opening tip, as Maryland shot out of the gates with an 11-2 run which left the Boilermakers spinning at the starting line. The Boilermakers were only able to muster 9 points in the first quarter in a brutal offensive performance. They found a little more success in the second quarter scoring 17, but still allowed Maryland to extend the gap even further. 10 turnovers and a 1-7 shooting performance from behind the arch in the first half put Purdue in a hole they just could not get out of. As a result, the score heading into the half, was 44-26 Maryland advantage.

Although the first half was rough, coming out of the break wasn’t any better for Purdue as Maryland was delivering body blows to the Boilermakers all half long. There became a point where the Boilermakers just seemed disinterested as there have been many time this season, and gave up. They got some more shots to fall compared to the first half but just could not stop anything as Maryland trounced all over them on their way to a 29 point win.

Kayana Traylor once again led the team in scoring posting 15 points on 4-7 shooting from the field and 7-9 from the charity stripe. She has been the most consistent player for Sharon Versyp, but it has not been enough to make up for the lack of talent and coaching this team has.

This team is done. With only 1 game left during the Big Ten regular season slate, the end of the year might be a welcomed sight for Purdue fans. The Big Ten finale will come this Sunday at 2pm as Purdue hosts Illinois in a rematch of their February 7th game. The Illini are also an uninspiring 3-16 on the season, with one of those wins coming against the Boilermakers. That was the moment many knew would cause this team to crumble down the stretch.

Just a handful of games left until the Versyp era is over in West Lafayette.
