Purdue Sports’ Immaculate Weekend

That’s your First Place Boilermakers in multiple sports.

Yes, Purdue kept the Cannon in a dull 13-9 affair, taking the all-time series lead over Illinois for the first time since 1905, but it was a big weekend for other Purdue sports as well. Currently, Purdue is in first place in the Big Ten West in football as well as in volleyball and women’s soccer after a great weekend.

Volleyball

#7 Purdue 3, #3 Ohio State 2

The kids would likely qualify this one as a “banger”, as a sold out Holloway Gym saw Purdue take down the undefeated Buckeyes in one of the best wins in program history. Purdue was down 2-1 after taking the first set, but rallied to win set 4 25-22 and set 5 15-11 for the first win over a top 3 opponent since 2015. I don’t know volleyball stats well, but this sounds good:

Two Boilermakers produced double-doubles: setter Hayley Bush (47 assists, 13 digs) and outside hitter Caitlyn Newton (15 kills, 13 digs). Bush set a season-high in assists, while Newton matched her career-high in digs and season-best in kills along the way. Meanwhile, outside hitter Grace Cleveland was just one dig shy of her own double-double, tallying 15 kills (.209 attack %) and nine digs.

#7 Purdue 3, Indiana 0

Purdue wins a 14th consecutive Monon Spike in a relatively easy sweep in Bloomington. The Boilers are now 10-1 overall on the season, 2-0 in Big Ten play, and will probably be in the top 5 and highest rated Big Ten team this week after #2 Wisconsin suffered a shocking upset at the hands of Maryland. They have dropped only 6 sets all season, and three were to a top 5 Louisville team in a 3-0 loss.

Women’s Soccer

Purdue 2, Illinois 1

Be it standard football or metric football, Purdue proved it was better than Illinois this weekend. Sarah Griffith gave Purdue a goal in the 55th minute and benefitted from an own goal two minutes later.

Marisa Bova got a career high 7 saves, but gave one up on a rebound in the 83rd minute.

Purdue 2, Iowa 1 OT

Griffith saved Purdue on Sunday, notching a 90th minute tying goal before Teagan Jones got the game-winner in overtime at home to help Purdue knock off the Hawkeyes. Griffith’s goal was her 7th of the season and tied it with roughly 19 seconds left:

Unstoppable.

Purdue is now 8-1-2 overall with the lone loss coming at the hands of Notre Dame. They are also 3-0 in Big Ten play with wins over Nebraska, Illinois, and Iowa. That is sole possession of first place with 9 points, followed by 2-0-1 Wisconsin sitting on 7 points.
