Purdue running back Tirek Murphy has entered the transfer portal according to his twitter account. The young man had only been at Purdue for this season. He was a class of 2020 three star recruit on Rivals and 247 composite four star recruit. He committed to Purdue out of New York’s Christ the King high school. He chose Purdue over interest from Arizona State, Baylor, Boston College, and Buffalo among others. He was the #23 rated running back in the class according to Rivals. During his high school career he rushed for 1,694 to go along with 18 touchdowns on just 311 carries. That’s an average of over 5.4 yards per carry.
This puts Purdue in a tough spot at running back next season. They need both Alexander Horvath and King Dorue to stay healthy, because they are the only two returning scholarship backs on the roster with the departure of Murphy. In-coming Freshman running back Ja’Quez Cross should help bolster the ranks, but the converted wide receiver is raw and will a limited package that keeps him as far away from pass protection as possible.
With the new transfer rules put in place by the NCAA this is the sort of thing we will see more and more of. It’s hard to take anything from this transfer as we know so little about how Murphy would have fit in on the team or if his body was ready for the college game. The Purdue sports website lists him at 5’10 and 215 lbs. but that website is notoriously out of date and often has incorrect information.
As we are still early in the process there’s no word on where Murphy will land but we wish him luck and hope he finds an opportunity that suits him. Until then, next man up.
