Portal Analysis: Quarterback

Purdue added three quarterbacks since Coach Odom arrived.

The most important position on the football team is the quarterback position. Purdue, aside from Bennett Meredith is having a total makeover of the position, while more than half of the roster will be new faces of new faces, Purdue fans should get most familiar with this young quarterback room.

Hudson Card, Ryan Browne, and Marcos Davila left town with Ryan Walters, leaving an empty quarterback room.

Enter three young gunslingers trying to prove themselves.

Malachi Singleton (Arkansas), EJ Colson (UCF), and Evans Chuba (Washington State) are all in West Lafayette and ready to work.

Quarterback is the most important position on the team, and these young players are all trying to prove why they should be the man.

The frontrunner is probably Malachi Singleton.

Singleton, a redshirt sophomore, has the most experience of the trio. He entered the game for an injured Taylen Green against Tennessee and led the Razorbacks to a comeback victory over the 4th-ranked Volunteers.

At 6-1, 230 pounds, and the ability to run he is what Odom appears to want in his quarterback, as he wants to ensure that Purdue runs the ball effectively.

EJ Colson will push Singleton, though. Of the three he is the only one to have started a game during their time with their previous team.

Colson started one game for UCF as a true freshman during the 2024 campaign. He struggled in that start before being benched against Cincy.

The now redshirt freshman will have an uphill climb to beat out Singleton as well, who I see as the better player.

Lastly, Coach Odom added Evans Chuba from Washington State, who is also a redshirt freshman.

Chuba has not taken a snap in two seasons, as he was hurt his entire senior year of high school. The Canadian prospect will probably find himself third on the depth chart as he is a raw talent who is continuing to get better but will try and battle for the backup position as well.

Overall, Coach Odom added talent with a major upside. All three players were rated high as high school prospects and can run.

I see it shaking out as such…

  1. Malachi Singleton
  2. EJ Colson
  3. Evans Chuba

If Bennett Meredith sticks around I could see he being the 2nd or 3rd string quarterback on the roster as well.
