No. 1 Purdue suffered its largest home defeat in recent memory and tied the largest home defeat for a No. 1 overall team in NCAA history on Saturday. The Boilermakers’ 81-58 defeat against No. 10 Iowa State, tied UConn’s 23-point loss to Villanova in 1995.
“(Iowa State) stole our spirit,” Purdue head coach Matt Painter said postgame. “I don’t think we’re in a position right now to grind out a victory. We’ve got people in our league just as good as these guys.”
With the loss – Purdue has fallen to 8-1 overall. With a new No. 1 overall team looming, No. 2 Arizona is set to meet No. 20 Auburn in Phoenix on Saturday.
The Boilermakers will host Minnesota, who just knocked off No. 22 Indiana at Mackey Arena on Wednesday.
