It’s been a wild ride for Devin Mockobee, a former two-star recruit who bet on himself and walked on at Purdue over other college offers. He came out of nowhere to lead the 2022 team in rushing with 968 yards as a redshirt freshman, setting the Purdue freshman rushing and rushing attempts record in the process. For his efforts, he was named Honorable Mention All-Big Ten. He followed up his sensational inaugural season with an 811-yard sophomore campaign, once again being named honorable mention All-Big 10.
Last season, he was one of the very few bright spots on offence, leading the team with 687 rushing yards and four touchdowns. He single-handedly attempted to win the Oregon State game, but his 16 rushes for 168 yards and a touchdown weren’t enough to get the job done. While the stats indicate Mockobee is coming off a down year, I’m going to go ahead and throw an extra 300 yards on his end-of-the-season total that he lost to general incompetence around him.
Mockobee comes into his final season of college football as the centerpiece of what should be a physical Barry Odom / Josh Henson offense. He should get all the carries he could want in an offense that should value the ball and time of possession. If Purdue surprises this season, it will be because Devin led the way for the offense.
