Huh?
For over 35 years, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have finished the college football season with neither a Heisman Trophy or a national championship. Is that a little too hyperbolic? Then maybe we can just say that for over 30 years the Notre Dame Fighting Irish have finished the college football season with neither a Heisman Trophy or a New Year’s 6 bowl victory.
It’s been rough.
When Steve from Norman, Oklahoma, goes on his local radio station and rants about Notre Dame being irrelevant, it’s less to do about national championships than Heisman’s and NY6 bowl game wins. The national championship part is just the gigantic salt crystals that get shoved into our collective stab wounds.
So — national championship aside — what would you rather Notre Dame get this season if you could guarantee one result. Do you want a Heisman, or do you want a guaranteed playoff win? Theoretically of course, that one playoff win could be at home against a very fired up Air Force squad — and I’m not sure that’s the clout that we’re chasing.
Still… you have to pick one so get at it.
