Sports Media World Reacts To The Notre Dame News

August 5, 2021 by The Spun Leave a Comment

On Wednesday, the college football world received major news regarding Notre Dame’s home opener for the 2021 season.

Notre Dame’s matchup with Toledo on Sept. 11 will be exclusively on Peacock, NBC’s exclusive streaming service. The network also announced that all home games for the Fighting Irish will be streamed on the app this season.

Pete Thamel of Yahoo Sports believes this matchup between Notre Dame and Toledo could be a sign of things to come, saying “The Toledo game is likely a litmus test for the power of Notre Dame to deliver streams.”

If college football games ditch national broadcasts and head over to streaming services, that wouldn’t sit well with the public. After all, there are countless fans upset that Peacock has the exclusive rights for the Notre Dame-Toledo game.

“Man, NBC should be paying us to watch that game,” one college football fan tweeted.

Another issue is that Peacock’s app isn’t easily accessible for everyone. Streaming services can experience issues from time to time, which could spell trouble for Notre Dame fans.

“I almost threw the remote through my TV every time I tried to use Peacock to watch the Olympics so hopefully not,” a Notre Dame fan said after seeing the latest report.

NBC’s decision to place Notre Dame on Peacock means that Drew Brees’ debut in the broadcast booth will not be on national TV. That’s unfortunate news for fans of the future Hall of Famer.

“Drew Brees debut in the booth will now be exclusively on Peacock,” Hammer and Rails of SB Nation tweeted. “What a world.”

All this backlash on social media probably won’t change NBC’s decision, but the ratings for the Notre Dame-Toledo game will have a huge influence on how the network handles the Fighting Irish’s schedule moving forward.

Notre Dame fans, are you OK with the home opener airing exclusively on Peacock?
