Ryan Day made headlines after Ohio State’s last-second win at Notre Dame Saturday when he called out former Fighting Irish head coach Lou Holtz.
“I’d like to know where Lou Holtz is right now. What he said about our team, I cannot believe. This is a tough team right here. We’re proud to be from Ohio. It’s always been Ohio against the world, and it’ll continue to be Ohio against the world,” Day said, referring to Holtz’s interview on “The Pat McAfee Show” in which he said Notre Dame was the tougher team and would win by 10 points.
On Sunday, ESPN’s Paul Finebaum and Matt Barrie addressed Day’s postgame rant on their weekly college football show.
“I’m sure there are plenty of Lou Holtz jokes going around today, but I happened to be around Lou about a year ago… at 86 or 87, whatever he is, still very sharp and amazing guy so I’m glad Lou has gotten a curtain call,” Finebaum said. “I doubt Lou really cares. He said what he said because that’s who he is.
“I think Ryan Day had a great moment, especially versus the other coach who made a basic elementary coaching mistake at the end of the game and the cost of that is incalculable.”
Ohio State’s 17-14 win at Notre Dame Stadium made it six straight victories over the Fighting Irish dating back to 1995.
With the loss, Notre Dame fell from ninth to 11th in the new AP poll top 25, while Ohio State moved up from No. 6 to No. 4.
