A key Notre Dame football staff member has resigned just before the start of fall camp.
Matt Balis, who has been the program’s Director of Football Performance since 2017, resigned on Tuesday, citing “personal reasons.” Balis came to Notre Dame after stints at Houston, Utah, Florida, Virginia, Mississippi State and UConn.
In his time with the Fighting Irish, the Chicago native revitalized Notre Dame’s strength and conditioning program and helped the team reach six-straight bowl games, including College Football Playoff appearances in 2018 and 2020.
Additionally, Balis trained over a dozen first-round picks, most recently Kyle Hamilton (2022), Jerry Tillery (2019) and Quenton Nelson and Mike McGlinchey (2018).

Fred Hale, Notre Dame’s associate director of strength and conditioning, will fill in for Balis on an interim basis, head coach Marcus Freeman announced.
“We have an innovative sports performance team who collaborated with Coach Balis and me in designing our program and Fred will continue to implement that plan,” Freeman said in a press release.
Notre Dame will open fall training camp on Wednesday, one month before the Fighting Irish take on Navy in Ireland in their 2023 season opener.
