The Irish went UP and and Tech went DOWN
Cam Burke was the hero as Irish take first game of the weekend in Michigan’s upper peninsula.
Following last week’s 2-1 victory on opening weekend against the Long Island Sharks, the Notre Dame Fighting Irish took the show on the road and to northern Michigan for a Friday evening matchup with the Michigan Tech Huskies at MacInnes Student Ice Arena.
First Period
Despite committing 3 penalties in the opening frame, Michigan Tech was able to keep Notre Dame off the scoreboard. Goalie Ryan Bischel, making his first start of the season for the Irish, saw only 6 shots in the first 20 minutes, as the Huskies spent most of the period on the penalty kill. The teams headed into the first intermission scoreless.
Second Period
The second period opened with a broken power-play for the Irish, and once again they were unable get much pressure. However, they finally got on the board when Cam Burke tapped in a rebound for his second of the season, with assists from Ryder Rolston and Grant Silianoff. Not to be outdone by the Tech PK in the first, the Irish killed off three penalties of their own in the middle frame.

Third Period
Special teams for both squads continued to impress as regulation came to a close. Tech pulled goalie Blake Pietila for the extra attacker, and tied the contest at 1 with just over 54 seconds left, thanks to a goal from Ryland Mosley. Things then went from bad to worse, as Landon Slaggert was called for interference on the play and the Irish again went on the penalty kill.
Overtime
Once again, the penalty kill came up big for the Irish when needed, as Tech’s broken power-play to open overtime was killed off. With just 5 seconds left to go in the extra frame, Cam Burke buried home his second of the night and third of the season to give the Irish the victory in their first road game of the season
